Windows 98 cleaner is not a detergent or spray for shining up PCs that use Windows 98.
Windows PCs have a part of the system called the registry.
ALthough they weren't eliminated, the registry was designed to supplant
the "ini" files that Microsoft had used with the older Windows 3.x systems.
The "ini" files were organized into named or labelled sections, but
it was just a text file without any strict standards for layout, so
it was possible to inadvertently duplicate information.
The "ini" files had almost no protection against intruder programs.
Although better organized into a hierarchical system, the registry
does not offer strict security against tampering.
A program can make programmatic calls to place data in the registry.
You can look at registry data with RegEdit. Microsoft created the
Registry Editor (RegEdit) to allow update, insertion, and deletion
of registry keys.
If you want to control what starts up when you reset your PC,
you can use MSConfig.exe, by Microsoft. It lets you look at
certain items from the registry and at your discretion, pick
the ones you want to start up, or not!
But MSConfig does not address the issue of the registry getting
cluttered. The operation of the Windows system and the execution
of programs on the Windows PC pushes data into and pulls data from
the registry. The registry fills up with this data and that is used
to keep track of settings such as the most recently used files,
colors, last screen location and such. Although all versions of
Windows registries are used in a similar fashion, Windows 98 is
especially susceptable to the registry getting full of junk.
So A Windows 98 cleaner is in order. You can download registry
cleaners that will go through the registry and remove junk as
well as scanning for malicious software entries by adware and spyware.
