Registry programs are programs used to manage, or clean, the Windows registry. The registry consists of some files that Windows uses the registry to handle the startup and running of your PC. Installing a program on your PC puts data in the registry. Viruses and such may also add things in the registry so they can start up every time you boot your system. The Windows registry is fairly easy to manipulate, and so programs crafted to penetrate your system can alter the registry. RegEdit is a utility program from Microsoft that can be used to view, add, change, and remove data from the registry. Hierarchically arranged, the registry resembles the display produced by My Computer or File Explorer when you look at the files on your hard disk. Another program, MSConfig, lets you view and selectively activate and deactivate items at startup time on your system. Many programs read from or write to the registry during normal operation. It is common for programs to maintain or remember certain settings you have made while using the program. Often this type of data is kept in the registry and then recalled whenever the program is restarted. However, once in a while programs don't manage what the put into the registry and remember to take it out when they are done. Also, the uninstaller for a program should delete the program's registry data. But this fails sometimes too, leaving garbage in the registry. Well it's time to take out the garbage. And to do that many people use specialty registry programs, called registry cleaners, to clean up.
