Registry clean up is the process of removing old, out-of-date, unused information from the
Windows registry. When programs are loaded onto your PC and when they are used, information
is placed into the registry or updated.
Phishing websites may try to put entries in the registry to hijack your system.
If a program is activated on your system it is a simple and straightforward
process to change the registry.
When you use File Explorer, or maybe My Computer, your view the files and
directories on your hard disk in a hierarchical list.
With a program called RegEdit, you
can look at the registry in very much the same way. It is by Microsoft and comes with Windows.
Another utility from Microsoft displays information extracted from the registry.
THe utility is, MSConfig.exe. It allows you to select which programs you want to
run at startup of your PC.
But MSCOnfig is not a very fine or detailed control. Basically it's just on or off
as far as MSConfig is concerned.
Legitimate programs that you want on your system use the registry as a storage bin also.
And I guess you could say they spill a little once in a while. They put stuff in the
registry that doesn't get taken out. Or when you retire a program from your PC it should
clean up after itself during the uninstall, but now and again it does not.
When this happens you need to do a registry clean up and you may be looking to download registry cleaners.
